New Sermon Series: Learning to Live in the Comfort of the Gospel

What is your only comfort in life and in death?

With this profound question, the Heidelberg Catechism begins one of the most beloved and enduring summaries of the Christian faith. More than 450 years after it was written, its message continues to speak with remarkable clarity and relevance to Christians today.

Written in 1563 in Heidelberg, Germany, during the Protestant Reformation, the Heidelberg Catechism was commissioned by Elector Frederick III to provide a clear, biblical, and pastoral guide for teaching the Christian faith. Unlike many theological documents of its time, it was written not merely to defend doctrine but to comfort believers by directing them to the grace of God revealed in Jesus Christ. Its warm, personal tone has made it one of the most treasured confessions of the Reformed Church.

The Heidelberg Catechism is built around three great themes drawn from the book of Romans:

  • Our Misery – understanding the seriousness of our sin and our need for salvation.
  • Our Deliverance – discovering God’s gracious redemption through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • Our Gratitude – learning how believers joyfully respond to God’s saving grace through holy living, worship, prayer, and loving obedience.

At the heart of the Heidelberg Catechism is the comforting truth that our hope is found not in ourselves, our achievements, or our circumstances, but in belonging—body and soul, in life and in death—to our faithful Saviour, Jesus Christ.

In an age marked by anxiety, moral confusion, identity crises, individualism, and spiritual uncertainty, the Heidelberg Catechism provides a deeply biblical framework for understanding who God is, who we are, what Christ has done for us, and how we are called to live. It reminds us that true comfort is found neither in wealth nor success, but in the unchanging promises of the gospel.

Throughout this series, we will explore the rich biblical teaching of the Heidelberg Catechism, examining its doctrines in light of Scripture and discovering how these timeless truths equip us to face the challenges of modern life with confidence, hope, and joy.

Whether you are new to the Christian faith or have followed Christ for many years, this series will encourage you to grow in your knowledge of God’s Word, deepen your love for Christ, and strengthen your confidence in the gospel.

Verse of the Day

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
